Paper publications featuring Brubeck

* One important publication is Dave's quarterly newsletter which gives details of all his upcoming concerts and so forth. You can ask for your own copy from
The DBQ Newsletter

USA
* I'm told that there may be a new biography of Dave in preparation. Here is all I know: "Forthcoming: Dave Brubeck with Eric Nisenson's A LIFE OF JAZZ, an in-depth account of the jazz great's long and illustrious life as told to award-winning music writer Eric Nisenson, author of Round About Midnight: A Portrait of Miles Davis. Contacts are Robert Nirkind at Billboard Books, and Jim Fitzgerald at the Carol Mann Agency (world)."
* The pianist John Salmon (who has recorded many of Brubeck's solo piano compositions) has also written some articles on Brubeck, in American Music Teacher (Feb/March 1992 and Feb/March 2001) and The Chronicle of higher Education (October 1997).
* The Summer 1997 edition of The Jazz Report has a cover article about Brubeck, focusing mainly on the album In Their Own Sweet Way (Telarc), which features sons Dan, Darius, Chris, and Matthew. Dave also talks about still being Columbia's best-selling jazz artist in Europe, and hearing Tito Puente play Take Five in 4/4. The magazine's address is: The Jazz Report, 14 London Street, Toronto, Ontario M6G 1M9, Canada. Telephone (416) 533 2813. Email jazzmag@pathcom.com
* I'm told that the April 1996 edition of Clavier magazine had an article about Brubeck written by Rosemary Hallum.
* The authorised biography, It's About Time - the Dave Brubeck Story by Fred Hall was published by the University of Arkansas Press in January 1996. It's a good read, explaining Brubeck's background and re-telling many anecdotes about the classic quartet.
* The December 1994 issue of: CADENCE - The Review of Jazz & Blues has a Musician-To-Musician Interview with Brubeck, conducted by Martin Totusek. Back issues are available from Cadence Magazine, Cadence Building, Redwood, New York 13679-9612, phone (315) 287-2852.
* The definitive printed Dave Brubeck Discography by Dr Klaus-Gotthard Fischer was published by the University of Duisberg, Germany, in 1992. (I haven't obtained a copy of this yet, and obviously it will not include the most recent albums.) It was re-issued in a slightly different form in English as Dave Brubeck: Improvisations and Compositions - The Idea of Cultural Exchange by Storb (principal author), Fischer (discographer), and Thompson (translator), published by Peter Lang in NYC (cost $45.95).
* Downbeat magazine ran features on Brubeck in three issues:
21st Nov 1963
Brubeck and Kenton - alike yet unalike
30th June 1966
Dave Brubeck, Composer - by Leonard Feather
25th March 1976
Dave Brubeck Quartet - a quarter of a century young
When I get time, I'll scan the text and put it on-line.
* I also have a couple of concert programmes from the sixties with the usual feature blurb about the quartet. Maybe that'll go on-line sometime too.
* Time Magazine featured Brubeck as a cover story on 8th November 1954. Some of the content is on the WWW.
