The tracks on this 4-CD boxed set were selected personally by Dave Brubeck himself, giving a flavour of his recorded output over about 45 years. The 76-page accompanying booklet has a biography of DB and photographs supplied by Dave and Iola; as well, each track has a commentary by DB, e.g.

"I never wrote down 'Unsquare dance' either - just sang it in the car on the way to the session, came in and said 'Let's play this tune in 7/4.' When we finally got the ending right, I promised the group that we would never have to play the tune again. You can hear Joe's laugh of relief at the end. It wasn't until I began performing with my sons that I started to feature this tune. It was a big surprise to me when the audience in Vienna started to clap along in 7/4 time. I didn't understand how this could be possible until I was told that one of their popular TV shows used 'Unsquare dance' as its theme."
